The Versailles Orangerie

 

The Versailles Orangerie L'Orangerie de Versailles

 

Created by Hardouin-Mansart in 1684, the Orangerie, encircled by the Stairs of a Hundred Steps (les escalier des CEnt-Marches) housed a collection of several thousand rare trees, including the famous "connetable", the oldest and biggest and one of the first trees to be imported. It was said to have been planted in 14221 in Pampelune and bought to France by Le Connetable de Bourbon, hence its name.
The parterre of embroidery in the Orangerie were used to show of all the different varieties of trees to their best avantage. The Orangerie is entirely constructed of carved Stone

The Southern parterre is a very good example of box edging, comprising clipped box shrubs planted on a base of sand and coloured minerals.
With The Northern parterre, Le Nôtre created a perpendicular axis which cut across the courtyard.

The Arc de Triomphe grove

 

The Arc de Triomphe grove Le bosquet de l'Arc de Triomphe

 

In 1715, the group of sculptures named "Triumphant France" (La France Triomphante), dating from 1682/1983, Allegory of the triumph over Spain and the Empire, was presented here.
Works by Tuby, Coysevox.
There were also several ornamental wall-mounted fountains in this grove.

This amphitheatre was designed by Le Nôtre, using two different types of materials for the steps : grass where the spectators sat and millstone grit vocered with shells and running water.

Created by Mansart in 1684, this is composed of 32 arcades with slate blue, violet breccia and pink Pyrenean marble columns.
This Grove was intended to promot French marble.

The Dômes grove

First called The "Grove of renown" (bosquet de la renommée), it was designed by Le Nôtre in 1675.
This grove took on its final name when two dome-roofed lodges wer added by Mansart.
This lodges no longer exist.

Created by Gaspard Marsy.
Topiary designs (clipped trees).
Represent the giant Enceladus, who was buried under the rocks which should have helped him climb mount Olympus, as punishment for his disrespectful gesture.

Reputedly created by Le Nôtre, The green carpet is part of the perspective developed by this garden designer from the outset of the building work, in the centre of the royal walkway.

The Maze grove

 

The Maze grove Le bosquet du Labyrinthe

 

Thes fountains decorated with lead animals illustrated Aesop's falbes.
Repmaced in 1775 by the Queen's grove.
Only several details of 150 animals cast in gilded lead by Le Gros, Tuby, Le Hongre and the Marsy brothers can be found today in the palace's storage rooms.
