Gardens and Palace

The parks and gardens of Versailles

In the park of nearly 20 000 acres, 200 000 trees have been planted, and each year some 210 000 flowers were renewed. 15 woods were also created.
This were made up of shrubs and trees of a maximum height of 10 meters so that, from the Palace, the King could always see the horizon. Elms, lime threes, oaks, beech, poplars, fir trees, box, holly and yew were the most popular varieties. These small woods were then replaced by trimmed hedgerows.

The Versailles fountains at one point counted 1400 water jets using 6300 m3 of water per hour, but the piping system was not able to supply water continually. Moreover, the 30 km of lead pipes were often damaged and in need of repair.
