The panorama of Versailles 1715
Different techniques
have been used on wood, by superimposing
an oil-based glaze on an acrylic base ; oil paint has been used to accentuate
the details and to give a patina that corresponds to the style of the
XVIIth century French School of Art.
References : for the overall aspect and the angle chosen, inspiration was
taken from an etching by Israel Sylvestre, a XVIIth century artist,
and the painters Pierre Patel and Jean-Baptiste Martin.
Iconographic research was necessary to reproduce the multitude of
minute details and the reconstitution
of the architectural characteristics of the buildings and
the gardens for this overall view of the Versailles Palace in 1715.
Some 900 hours of work were necessary to create this panorama which includes
approximately 200 figures, including noblemen and commoners strolling
around the park to sedan chairs, coaches, horsemen, workmen and soldiers.
The proportions of the facades, the exaggeration of the height of the hill surrounding
the site dramatize the scene in the manner of XVIIth century artists. The overriding
colours have been chosen to evoke the departure of the great King - the setting sun(king)[Roi Soleil]
- and to underline the fact that 1715 was the year of Louis XIV's death.
